Open Competition

Open Competition

There will be an open competition at Belston Loch on Sunday the 8th September. £50 prize for the heaviest fish so everyone is in with a chance of winning.

There are still a few places left for the club outing on Saturday. Hoddom beat on the Annan is a smashing beat to fish and although there is not much water at the moment there is still a good chance of a salmon or sea trout. There has been some rain so hopefully there will be a rise in water levels.

The great thing about the Annan is the brown trout fishing available, if the water seems  low for salmon fishing the trout fishing is still some of the best available in Scotland. Brown trout of 2lbs and upwards are common on the Annan with fish in the 4-7lb caught each year. There is a 100% catch and release on all brown trout so if you do come along please remember this.

Fishing is by fly only but if the water rises above the marker then spinning and worm fishing is acceptable.

The cost of the trip is £25 including bus travel from Mauchline leaving at 6am on Saturday

There may be a chance of a place for non members so please get in touch if you fancy a day out on 07957942317

As in my previous post, there was a club competition last Sunday. This was won by Kenny Houston with a 4 fish bag of over 12lbs. Second was Douglas Rooney again with a 4 fish bag of just over 12lbs. Kenny also won heaviest fish with a 4lb rainbow.

Although the heaviest bags are for 4 fish, this is the bag limit for competitions.

The loch is still fishing well and the brown trout can now be seen feeding on the surface. We have never stocked the loch with brown trout over 2lbs but last week a brown of 5lbs was landed and released. Luckily this fish was photographed before being returned.

5lbs Brown Trout

This stunning 5lb brownie is again a great product of the natural loch which boasts an amazing amount of feeding for the trout and allows them to grow into hard fighting specimens.

There will be a members only competition this Sunday at Belston Loch.

There will be trophies for the heaviest fish and the heaviest 4 fish bag.  Weights will also count towards club championship.

8 am to 4pm

Since my last update the loch has been fishing very well. Anglers are finding it easy to catch their 4 fish while those with the average fish being around 2.5lbs although fish in the 3-4lbs mark are not uncommon.

Those fishing catch and release on the fly have been having some great sport with catches running into the teens again with the average fish size around the 2.5lbs mark

Comments have been very positive with everyone in agreement on the excellent condition of these very hard fighting fish.

Jim pictured below prefers to hunt for the specimen fish and his years of experience have shown in his success again this weekend when he landed an 8lb rainbow on Saturday and a 6lb rainbow on Sunday. These fish are there in good numbers but as they have been stocked at around the 3lb mark and been in for 18 months to 2 years they can be a challenge to catch.

On the River last Friday one angler had a pumper day fishing for Spring Salmon, he landed four in one morning at 12lb, 10lb, 7lb and 7lb. What a day.

Now taking names for the club outing to the Hoddom beat on the Annan.

An excellent beat that we visited last year so have booked the full beat again. Friendly ghillie and welcoming local anglers who even dished out spey casting lessons. The total catch for last year even in high water was 12 sea trout to 4lbs and numerous brown trout to 3lbs. An excellent days fishing.

There are 15 places available so the first 15 names will get a place, any extra name will go on the reserves list if anyone happens to drop out.

The beat is generally fly fishing only but in high water as we had last year, spinning and worm fishing will be permitted.

Please get your names in as quick as you can.

Fully paid up members only – If by 15th June we have spaces left we will offer them to friends of members.

Price will be approx. £25 but still to be confirmed. This will include fishing and transport.

Info on the beat can be found by clicking this link.

Please note that there will be no alcohol on the bus as per the licence conditions of the hire.

Belston Loch has been undergoing some recent improvements and now boasts some new boats, pathways and cabin. (pictures to follow)

The loch is fishing very well at the moment and the overwintered fish are now on the feed. The loch is unique in that it has excellent feeding for the fish and it does not take long for stocked fish in the 2-3lb range to grow into some superb specimens.

Here are some pictures of some overwintered fish caught in the past week.

All of the above fish were safely returned to fight another day. These fish are not stocked at this size, we only stock with fish around the 2-3lb mark but because of the vast amount of natural feeding in the loch it allows the fish to grow naturally. We had the scales of the 7lb rainbow looked at and it would appear that it has been in the loch for around 18 months. This means it has probably doubled in size since it was stocked. Our fish are stocked under licence from Moorland fisheries in Cumbria. Moorland has regular health checks and is very strict on biosecurity.

I will update some more pictures os the loch soon. Please see our website for details on how to buy day/season permits.

We also hold monthly open competitions and I will update this page with the details.

The first of the Club Outings will be on Friday the 22nd March 2013

The outing will be to the magnificent River Tay. We have booked 14 rods on the Dalmarnock Beat and the cost will be £30 per head. This will include the fishing and transport.

The first 14 names to the secretary ASAP on 07916346774

Here is a link to the Dalmarnock Beat  on Fishpal – http://www.fishpal.com/Scotland/Tay/Dalmarnock/?dom=Pal

Fishing is by fly or spinning.

The river  has fresh run spring salmon from opening day on the 15th of January and this year the Malloch tropy for the heaviest opening day spring salmon was won by an angler on Dalmarnock who landed an 18lb sea liced beauty. He also happened to land another 16lb fish on the same day. Some more info on the beat can be found here http://www.scottish-fishing-guide.blogspot.co.uk/

This should be a cracking day out so get your name in quick.
